Newfoundland

Explore the unique cultures and spellbinding beauty of remote Newfoundland – from the spectacular landscapes of Gros Morne to the glacial giants of Iceberg Alley and huge colonies of whales and puffins in the surrounding Atlantic.

Newfoundland is one of Canada’s most remote provinces and its status as a hidden gem is central to its unique appeal. Here you’ll find a way of life that remains true to the region’s roots. Many of the people sound more Irish than Canadian, preserving their fishing traditions in villages where clapboard houses perch on stilts at the water’s edge.

Newfoundland’s natural wonders are its main draw – mesmerising fjords of Gros Morne National Park, gigantic icebergs floating past Twillingate, and oceans teeming with whales and puffins off St John’s.

St John’s, the capital of Newfoundland, is one of the oldest cities in North America, renowned for its colourful ‘jellybean’ row houses and attractive harbour. Highlights around the city include Signal Hill, Cabot Tower and Cape Spear, the most easterly point in North America with the oldest standing lighthouse. Nearby Witless Bay offers wonderful opportunities to watch the world’s largest population of humpback whales as well as North America’s largest Atlantic puffin colony.

Further north, discover the remarkable story of Gander, once the world’s largest airport, and a town that played a key role in helping those affected by 9/11.

Newfoundland’s east coast is a highlight of the province, known as Iceberg Alley, where you can behold the amazing sight of icebergs floating past from May to July, carried south along Iceberg Alley from Greenland by the powerful Labrador Current.

Twillingate makes a great base for iceberg viewing with its iconic Long Point Lighthouse, while nearby Fogo Island is famous for the Fogo Island Inn, one of the world’s most unique hotels, perched partially on stilts on the edge of the Atlantic Ocean.

On Newfoundland’s wild west coast, the highlight is the spectacular scenery of Gros Morne National Park. Explore its fjords, mountains and waterfalls on boat trips and hikes with opportunities to spot wildlife including black bears, moose, caribou and bald eagles.

Northern Newfoundland and Labrador are the most remote parts of the province. The historical highlight is L’Anse aux Meadows, north of St. Anthony, North America’s only authenticated Viking settlement dating from the 11th century with a reconstructed longhouse.
