California

Overview & Highlights

California is the USA’s third largest state, and its northern half offers a world of natural beauty that's entirely its own. From smart cities and scenic coastlines to sky-high redwood trees, pristine alpine terrain and incredible hiking trails – Northern California is a dream destination for outdoor enthusiasts.

Experience all its spectacular sights with this round trip journey starting and ending in one of the world’s most famous cities: San Francisco. See it from the Golden Gate Bridge and the heart of the city’s centre while getting a literal taste of its local culture. Before leaving, you’ll even having the opportunity to see some of the Bay Area’s greatest landmarks and make time for your own city-wide exploration, fitting plenty in to your three days in San Francisco.

You’ll then drive to World Heritage site, Yosemite National Park for two days of awe-inspiring exploration, before heading to the splendid shores and turquoise waters of the inimitable Lake Tahoe. After two relaxing nights drive on to one of California’s lesser known, but no less impressive national parks: Lassen Volcanic. Spend a night at the base of this alpine volcanic beauty before continuing along the stunning Volcanic Legacy Scenic Byway to the southern edge of the Cascade Mountains for a night at Mount Shasta.

You’ll then head to the coast to see the tallest trees in the world at Redwood National Park, and hike to your heart's delight. Then make the long drive down to the charming coastal town of Mendocino with its beautiful beaches, cliffside trails and distinctive wineries.

Your last stop will be in California’s internationally-renowned wine country. Stroll through leafy vineyards, sip award-winning wines and dine at some of the finest restaurants in America for two relaxed days in Sonoma County before driving back to San Francisco for your flight home.

Our expert's opinion

“California is a vast state and once you leave the major cities, you’ll be amazed by the natural beauty you can encounter. Northern California is an outdoor enthusiast’s dream, and you won’t even believe you’re in the same state as Hollywood with alpine lakes, volcanic parks, jaw-dropping cliffs and World Heritage Sites just waiting to be explored.”
