Monterey and Carmel-By-The-Sea FAQs

Find out all you need to know about visiting Monterey and Carmel-By-The-Sea.

When is the best time to visit Monterey and Carmel-By-The-Sea?

While Monterey and Carmel can be visited year round thanks to California’s temperate climate, the best time to go to these pretty seaside towns is in the autumn between September and November. This season is not only the sunniest, but benefits from an ‘Indian Summer’ offering clear, warm days and mild evenings that are ideal for early morning strolls and evening beach bonfires. With daytime highs in the mid-20s just remember to bring an extra layer or jacket once nightfall hits.

Winter is the coldest season with fog, rain and temperatures between the high teens and single digits. Spring is still chilly with temperatures at the start of the season hovering around the mid-teens and rising to 20°C by May. The wet weather from winter brings beautiful wildflower landscapes throughout the area’s parks making it a beautiful time for hiking. Summer is traditionally warm with temperatures regularly reaching the mid-20s, but with ocean breezes along the coast, it’s a great place to escape the inland heat. Those who are interested in whale watching should know the season runs between April and December.
