Victoria is one of Canada’s most historic cities with beautiful gardens, colonial architecture and fantastic whale-watching in the surrounding ocean.
Known as The Garden City, British Columbia’s capital is one of Canada’s most elegant and oldest cities. With a pedestrianised downtown, graceful waterfront, abundant gardens and historic architecture, this city on the southern tip of Vancouver Island is a beautiful place to spend a few days. Explore the harbour by kayak, then take one of the world-famous whale-watching tours to nearby waters to spot orcas, grey whales, dolphins and seals.
On land, the city’s biggest attractions are the stately Parliament Buildings, the 55-acre Butchart Gardens, The Royal BC Museum and the 19th century Scottish Baronial mansion, Craigdarroch Castle. Enjoy a traditional high tea at the Fairmont Empress and some fine dining for dinner – Victoria has more restaurants per capita than any other Canadian city.
A 40-minute drive west of Victoria is the village of Sooke, the gateway to the scenic West Coast Road. Further north-west, the fishing village of Port Renfrew is surrounded by ancient rainforest and beautiful beaches, the starting point for the West Coast and Juan de Fuca trails.
