Gastronomic Gastown
Gastown is the city’s oldest district, growing from a single tavern opened by sea captain John ‘Gassy Jack’ Deighton in 1867. His statue graces the end of Water Street and exploring the area is a delightful step back in time through cobbled streets, past vintage lampposts and the famous Steam Clock, powered by a miniature steam engine in its base.
Gastown makes for a relaxing wander during the day when you can browse the antique shops, but the district really comes alive in the evening and along with adjacent Chinatown and Japantown districts has some of the best cuisine in the city. It’s no surprise in a city with such a thriving Asian population that sushi and other Can-Asian specialties feature highly. The street food is also not to be missed – grab some salmon candy or a Japadog while sightseeing. A foodie tour of the district will take you to the gastronomic highlights.
