Then your cruise departs, sailing past Vancouver Island to the Inside Passage, an astounding fjord-lined route through waters filled with whales and orcas. Head northwards along Canada’s west coast towards the southern slither of Alaska’s eastern pan handle.

After a few days admiring marine life, studying native American petroglyphs, and visiting Sitka – once the Russian-appointed regional capital, you will arrive in the glacier-fed waters of Icy Bay.

Then set a westward course for bear country, stopping at Kodiak and Katmai in search of their protected populations of brown bears, before reaching the intriguing human settlements of the Alaskan Peninsula, finally turning northwards at Dutch Harbour.

The remote islands of St Paul and St Matthew offer superb opportunities for bird watching with puffins, kittiwakes and cormorants among more than 300 species using these isles as resting posts during long, tiring migrations.

The voyage ends in Nome, an extraordinary gold rush town locked in a prospecting time warp. From here, you will fly south to Seattle and enjoy a tour of the city’s sights, waterfront and skyline before your final overnight stay.
