Sunshine Coast
The Sunshine Coast is an alluring destination of forested hills, fjords, inlets and islands of breathtaking beauty, including the stunning marine park of Desolation Sound.
Only accessible by sea or air, this tranquil 180-km stretch of inlets, islands and forested hills is refreshingly remote. The Sunshine Coast Trail that runs through the entire region is ideal for hiking and cycling, while the waters offer endless opportunities for kayaking, canoeing and boating amid spectacular scenery.
The ferry from Horseshoe Bay arrives near Gibsons overlooking Howe Sound. The best views are from the top of Soames Hill or Gospel Rock, while the waterfalls of Cliff Gilker Park are nearby.
Half Moon Bay, Smuggler’s Cove and Pender Harbour offer some of the best scenery in the region, popular for paddleboarding and kayaking, and there are sweeping views from Pender Hill and Mount Daniel.
A highlight near Egmont further north is Skookumchuck Narrows Provincial Park. The world-famous rapids which change direction twice daily are the fastest salt water rapids in North America with 20-metre-wide whirlpools. Further north, paddle Powell Forest Canoe Route, go rock climbing in the Eldred Valley and visit Savary Island, one of the most beautiful in the region with stunning beaches.
Lund is the literal end of the road and gateway to awe-inspiring Desolation Sound, a breathtaking marine park surrounded by steep evergreen mountains. Desolation Sound has more than 60km of shoreline, islands, bays and coves, and warm waters ideal for swimming and whale-watching. The surrounding forested hills also have large populations of grizzly bears, best viewed August to October in Toba Inlet.
