In the east of British Columbia, the Canadian Rockies stretch into Alberta. One of the largest mountain ranges in North America, the scenery here is stunning, from alpine lakes and waterfalls to snow-capped peaks and glaciers. Adventures are never far away – climbing, rafting, hiking, cycling, skiing – and the region has plenty of hot springs to unwind afterwards.
Four of British Columbia’s national parks are in this region as well as some 75 provincial parks. The mountain town of Golden is a great base to explore the mountains. The jewel in the crown is Yoho National Park. Meaning ‘wonder’ in the Cree language, the park contains the shimmering Emerald Lake, Takakkaw Falls, the second highest in Canada, and Burgess Shales, a sedimentary rock rich in fossils.
The Kootenays region along the river and lake of the same name is where most visitors stay. Nelson is a thriving artistic community offering a wide range of activities on Kootenay Lake, while Revelstoke is an adventure sports hub, convenient for Canyon Hot Springs and Glacier National Park.
