Spirit Bear Lodge

In the heart of The Great Bear Rainforest, indigenous-owned Spirit Bear Lodge offers unforgettable opportunities to watch white spirit bears, considered sacred by the First Nations.

In the remote fishing village of Klemtu within First Nations Kitasoo Xai’xais territory, Spirit Bear Lodge offers exclusive access to remote rainforest that is home to grizzly and spirit bears.

Founded in 2001, Spirit Bear Lodge employs roughly 10% of the community of Klemtu, supporting local conservation and community-based stewardship. The lodge pays homage to the traditional longhouses built by west coast First Nations with the Great Room Lounge area and ocean view deck. The dozen rooms are modern with private bathrooms, ocean views and either king bed or a pair of twin beds.

First Nations cultures believe that one in every ten black bears were created white to remind people that glaciers used to cover this land. The lodge is in a prime location to go in search of the spirit bear, one of the rarest animals in the world, as well as black bears, grizzlies, wolves and marine life including whales, porpoises, seals, sea lions and otters.

The lodge is accessible through direct flights from Vancouver to Bella Bella in The Great Bear Rainforest, from where guests are shuttled two hours north to Klemtu.
