Cowichan
The Cowichan Valley north of Victoria is Vancouver Island’s farming heartland with a mild climate, indigenous heritage, delicious food and lush scenery.
Named by the First Nations as ‘the land warmed by the sun’, the Cowichan Valley’s maritime climate makes it one of the warmest areas in Canada, stretching from the Pacific coast to the east coast of Vancouver Island.
Cowichan Bay is a charming seaside village with its own population of sea lions, ideal for kayaking, and good base for whale watching tours. Inland, Lake Cowichan at 30km long is one of the island’s biggest freshwater lakes and haven for fishing and boating. The surrounding Cowichan River Provincial Park has paths winding through dense forest. To the north, the town of Duncan is home of the Coast Salish First Nations, renowned for its collection of 38 totems, including one of the world’s widest.
Further north, the town of Chemainus was transformed two decades ago into one of the world’s biggest outdoor art galleries with over 40 colourful murals and a dozen sculptures dominating the town.
