Clothing & special equipment

Conditions can get very cold at higher altitudes, especially in Banff, Lake Louise and Jasper. Warm-weather clothing and good hiking boots are highly recommended.

Weather

April to September is the best time to visit Alberta with the warmest weather and the most sunshine. This is also the best period for watching wildlife. Note that at higher altitudes spring often does not arrive until June.

Altitude

Destinations such as Banff, Lake Louise and Jasper are over 1,000m with parts of Icefields Parkway up to 2,000m so it’s important to pace yourself and wear warm clothing at these altitudes.
