The Canadian Badlands are world-famous for their dinosaur fossils and otherworldly terrain in dramatic contrast to the rest of Alberta.
The Canadian Badlands are a global centre for fossils with the largest deposits of dinosaur bones in the world in an ethereal landscape quite unlike the rest of the province. East of Drumheller towards the US border, this semi-arid region was named by French explorers due to its inhospitable terrain but it’s far more easily explored nowadays.
The Badlands are dominated by strange sandstone ‘hoodoo’ formations, a haven for palaeontologists and novices in search of fossils. Dinosaur Provincial Park is a highlight of the region with a fascinating visitor centre, guided and self-guided trails, dinosaur digs and camping facilities. The park also has extensive wildlife, including deer, antelope and rattlesnakes.
