Wrangell-St Elias
Known as ‘the mountain kingdom of North America’, Wrangell-St Elias National Park is a vast wilderness of icefields, glaciers and canyons beneath many of the continent’s highest mountains.
At 13 million acres, Wrangell-St Elias is the largest national park in the USA, bigger than Switzerland and six times the size of Yellowstone. The park contains nine of the country’s 16 highest mountains, including Mount St Elias (5,489m).
The best access points are via Kennicott or Copper Center. The McCarthy Road makes for a spectacular drive, while a flightseeing tour is the best way to appreciate the immense scale of the region, including Mount Wrangell volcano and Balgey Icefield, the largest non-polar ice sheet in North America. The park has diverse wildlife including Alaska’s Big Five: bears, wolves, Dall sheep, moose and caribou.
The ghost town of Kennicott is a destination in itself, the site of an early 20th century copper mine with a 14-storey mill, historic trails, exhibitions and restored buildings.
Popular activities in the park include a day hike to the spectacular Root Glacier from Kennicott, and whitewater rafting down the Kennicott River.
