Sitka
Explore Alaska’s indigenous and Russian heritage in Sitka, and enjoy whale-watching, fishing and kayaking on the Pacific Ocean.
Sitka is the only main town in Alaska's Inside Passage directly on the Pacific Ocean with a dramatic location on Baranof Island, backed by the snow-capped peak of Mount Edgecumbe.
Dating back to the 1700's, Sitka was once named New Archangel, the capital of Russian America. Russian influence remains prominent in the town – from the grey, green and gold of reconstructed St Michael’s Russian Orthodox Cathedral to the preserved Russian Bishop’s House.
Baranof Castle on Castle Hill is where Russia formalised the sale of Alaska to the USA in 1867, while Sitka History Museum and Sheldon Jackson Museum are the best places to explore the indigenous, Russian and American history of the region.
Sitka National Historic Park is a highlight of the town, preserving the culture of the Tlingit people with 20 totem poles, a museum and walking trails through temperate rainforest.
Popular activities around Sitka include hiking in the surrounding Tongass National Forest, fishing for salmon and halibut, and kayaking on the nearby lakes and inlets. The region also has two wildlife rehabilitation centres – Fortress of the Bear for black and brown bears, and the Alaska Raptor Center for birds of prey. The whale watching is particularly good in Sitka with large populations of humpbacks visible on boat trips and from land at Whale Park near the town.
