Glacier Bay
Hear the thunderous roar of walls of ice crashing from glaciers into the sea – just one of the highlights of Alaska’s incredible Glacier Bay National Park.
Glacier Bay is one of Alaska’s most stunning national parks, covering over three million acres of mountains, glaciers, temperate rainforest and protected waters in deep sheltered fjords.
The park has more than 1,000 glaciers, including seven tidewater glaciers flowing from the mountains to the ocean. The most famous such as Margerie and Johns Hopkins actively calve icebergs into the sea. As well as glacier viewing, the park makes a spectacular backdrop for kayaking and wildlife watching. The waters are inhabited by humpback whales, orcas, porpoises, Steller sea lions and otters, while on land there are populations of black and brown bears.
About 90 miles north-west of Juneau, the park is only accessible by sea. Entrance to the park is via the charming village of Gustavus. The visitor centre at Glacier Bay Lodge in nearby Bartlett Cove has information on the best hiking trails. A flightseeing tour is a great way to take in the breathtaking scale of this incredible national park, including Mount Fairweather, one of the highest peaks in the USA.
