Fairbanks emerged from the Gold Rush in Alaska and the Yukon in the 1900's. The best place to explore the city’s golden heritage is at Pioneer Park with museums, relics, reconstructions and fairground rides in over 40 acres, while University of Alaska Museum of the North has extensive collections of art and natural history, including Blue Babe, a 36,000-year-old bison preserved by permafrost.
The Chena River State Recreation Area outside the city is one of the most popular places for activities – hiking, climbing, canoeing, wildlife watching and paddle wheeler cruises in summer; cross-country skiing, ice fishing, snowmobiling and dog-sledding in winter.
Nearby Chena Hot Springs Resort has thermal baths and the famous Aurora Ice Museum, the world’s largest year-round ice environment created from 1,000 tons of ice and snow. One of the most popular wildlife attractions near Fairbanks is Running Reindeer Ranch with herds of reindeer roaming free in boreal forest.
