Alaska

Overview & Highlights

Combine a self-drive tour to see glaciers, bears and whales in Kenai and Katmai with an epic rail journey to the interior on this diverse itinerary that covers Alaska’s incredible natural wonders.

The USA’s northernmost state has some of the greatest landscapes on the continent and this tour takes in Alaska’s unforgettable highlights by road and rail.

From Anchorage, head south to do a glacier cruise in Prince William Sound before reaching Seward on the Kenai Peninsula. Go kayaking, take a wildlife cruise in Resurrection Bay or hike to the massive Exit Glacier.

Your next stop is Homer, “Halibut Capital of the World”, a haven for anglers in a stunning location. Go whale-watching in the Gulf of Alaska or head to Katmai to watch brown bears fishing for salmon in waterfalls.

Head north via the Alaska Wildlife Conservation Center to Girdwood and take an aerial tram up Alyeska Mountain for views of Turnagain Arm’s glaciers and the Chugach Mountains.

Then take the Denali Star, Alaska Railroad’s flagship train, from Anchorage to Fairbanks. Head north of Anchorage to Talkeetna and Denali National Park, home to bears and wolves and of course North America’s highest mountain. Explore the Denali Highway on a jeep excursion or take a tundra wilderness tour to see wildlife. Alternatively, view Denali from above on a summit flightseeing tour, passing within half a mile of North America’s highest mountain, or embark on a Denali glacier landing by helicopter.

Continue north to Fairbanks, one of the most northerly large cities in the world and a top destination to experience the Midnight Sun in summer and the Northern Lights the rest of the year.

Note this itinerary begins in Anchorage and ends in Fairbanks but can easily be done the opposite way by beginning in Fairbanks and moving south.

Our expert's opinion

“Alaska is so full of incredible natural spectacles that you are spoilt for choice, but my favourite wildlife experience on this tour is watching the brown bears pawing at salmon in Katmai, while my favourite view has to be the mountain panorama on the flightseeing tour over Denali.”
