Alaska’s biggest city Anchorage is surrounded by spectacular glacial landscapes that can be explored on hiking and cycling trails.
Anchorage is an ideal base to discover incredible Alaskan scenery and wildlife, boasting a dramatic location between the Chugach Mountains and the Cook inlet leading to the Gulf of Alaska.
Anchorage is home to nearly half of the state’s population and one of the world’s most northerly big cities. Highlights of the city itself include the Alaska Heritage Museum with exhibitions on Alaska’s 11 major First Nations cultures, and Anchorage Museum, which tells the story of the state as well as showcasing some of Alaska’s best artworks.
There are some great cycling and hiking trails on the edge of the city, including the steep three-mile hike up Flattop Mountain for fantastic views of the surrounding Chugach State Park, and cyclists can follow the Tony Knowles Coastal Trail along the shore of the Cook Inlet to Kincaid Park.
There are many incredible glaciers near Anchorage, and one of the most accessible day trips by road is Portage Glacier, 50 miles south of the city. This can be combined with a visit to the Alaska Wildlife Conservation Center in the Portage Valley where rescued animals including brown bears, moose, bison and wolves inhabit 200 acres.
