Stuart

Stuart Whittington

Head of Product

Stuart is the Head of Product at Journeyscape and our sister brand, Journey Latin America. He is passionate about new adventures, venturing off the beaten path, and firmly believes that travel, when planned well, can be a force for good for all people and places involved.

After earning his stripes as a tour leader in Europe and South America, Stuart went on to manage product and commercial for a number of leading travel brands worldwide before ultimately landing at Journeyscape and Journey Latin America. While he has travelled all over the globe, his connection with the Americas – North, Central and South – has never waned, and he loves to return to visit as often as he can, and where possible with his family.

Having witnessed first-hand many of the challenges facing our changing world and environment, Stuart is particularly inspired by the many people he meets who seek to harness the positive power of tourism to support our planet’s nature, wildlife and local communities. This goes hand in hand with Stuart’s affinity for the great outdoors, and for getting under the skin of the places he visits.

WHAT IS YOUR FAVOURITE...?

PLACE

It’s impossible to settle on a favourite place in North America – the region is so magnificently diverse. That said, a personal highlight would be a self-drive trip through the awe-inspiring national parks of Utah and Arizona and hiking all the way down to the Colorado River at the bottom of the Grand Canyon (and back up again!). The experience of taking a helicopter trip to a deserted valley high in the winter Canadian Rockies, then snowshoeing through snow-laden evergreen forests, is also an unforgettable experience!

HOTEL

I would love to stay at one of the Bear Lodges located along the coast of British Columbia. To have the opportunity to be immersed in untouched nature, with the only neighbours being Canada’s wild bears and sea life in their natural habitat would be an absolute privilege.

EXPERIENCE

Of all the North American activities and things to do we offer, our Montgomery Civil Rights Tour in the Deep South is particularly inspiring. It offers an authentic, deeply personal and often moving insight into Alabama’s turbulent times in the 1960s. And if you’re lucky, you will be led by someone who was actually part of the Civil Rights Movement at the time – a true living-history experience that you simply cannot get from a book or documentary.

TRAVEL TIPS

Don’t be tempted to cram too much in. Resist the desire to see and do too much on your short trip away – you’re on holiday, so don’t be afraid to slow it down. Cutting back on travel time and allowing a little longer to experience the incredible places we visit is something no one ever regrets – it opens up the opportunity to explore a bit more, and makes your visit more sustainable too. Related to this, I love to travel by land rather than flying whenever I can – watching the landscapes change and connecting with people along the way – our self drives and rail journeys are a great way to do this!

PACKING TIPS

I always travel with my Water to Go filtered water bottle, which has a built-in filter that thoroughly cleans water from almost all water sources to make it drinkable. This means I very rarely need to buy water in single-use plastic bottles these days, both reducing plastic waste and saving money too! We’ve partnered with Water to Go, so our Journeyscape travellers can buy these bottles at a heavily discounted price when they book with us.
